Kowhaiwhai Patterns - Geometry using Translation, Reflection and Rotation.

Today we had a brief look at kowhaiwhai patterns and how they actually use mathematical concepts such as: Translation, Reflection and Rotation. We talked about Translation first and looked at what it means. We came to the conclusion that Translation is a copy of something just like language. When you translate a language you are copying (translating) that language into your language. Like the Maori people didn't have trucks so they didn't have a word for truck. So in many cases transliterations (translation or copy of the word) were used; such as Taraka for truck.
